95L Aka Maria could be next impact hurricane for East Coast?

Posted by Renato on September 6, 2011 at 10:10 AM

Good Morning everyone,

I have been working on the Hurricane Irene page since this morning and that will be completed in the next couple of days so stay tuned on it. For all the areas that have still have no power and are flooded out, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Any property that might have experienced damage from the storm should contact FEMA or go to your municipality website to find out if your able to file a claim. So since this storm is now officially over......

We now go onto the next storm, 95 L, that (yes, folks) might strike the East Coast again. And it seems like it will be more favorable (even though it is still early to tell) to hit than Katia was. The reason why Katia is heading out to sea is because of the trough that is currently in the area right now is forcing it to go NE and missing us. Or else it would have continued going WNW or even due west and might have impacted us greatly. But we will only see some high surf from the storm.

"1. EARLY VISIBLE SATELLITE IMAGES INDICATE THAT THE SHOWER ACTIVITY

ASSOCIATED WITH A LOW PRESSURE AREA CENTERED ABOUT 680 MILES WEST-

SOUTHWEST OF THE SOUTHERNMOST CAPE VERDE ISLANDS IS GRADUALLY

BECOMING BETTER ORGANIZED...AND A TROPICAL DEPRESSION COULD FORM

LATER TODAY OR WEDNESDAY. THIS SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO MOVE TOWARD

THE WEST OR WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 15 MPH AND HAS A HIGH

CHANCE...70 PERCENT...OF BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE

NEXT 48 HOURS. " (NHC)

Its still very early in the ballgame but latest model guidance shows the storm doing the exact same track to Katia and recurving out to sea. But, ridging is a big factor to all these threats so until it gets a good sampling in the long range, there is no blocking and thus it can recurve out to sea with ease. I will keep an eye on this storm and update you with more information on the storm.

Today's rain event is a combination of the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee and a cold front that is in the area. Looking at radar right now, it really looks like so far the NYC area has been spared of the heavy rains and Northwest NJ has been getting the brunt of it. One of my friends from there told me yesterday that he already had 2" of rain, so it does look like they are getting the brunt of it. But, you should definitely take an umbrella today to your destination.

Well that is all I have for today, I will update you with any new information on 95L. Have a good day everyone!
